Welcome to IslandScholar!

IslandScholar (IS) is the institutional database for scholarly publications by the UPEI community. It is a project of the UPEI Robertson Library and supports the goals of the University's Research Strategic Plan and the UPEI Open Access policy.

As an institutional repository, IslandScholar contains theses and capstone projects produced by UPEI graduate and undergraduate students. Consult the library website for further information and instructions for depositing theses.

IslandScholar is also a place for researchers to deposit copies of their publications, which may be made available to the public in accordance with publisher licensing agreements. We encourage researchers to deposit whatever version is allowed by the publication agreement (i.e., pre-print, post-print, publisher's PDF, etc) as soon as they publish. A pre-print is the author's manuscript pre-peer review. A post-print is the final manuscript post-refereeing before the published PDF. A time-limiting embargo to public access can be added to the PDF if that is required.  If you're looking for publisher policies on depositing an article into an institutional repository, check Sherpa Romeo or contact Keri McCaffrey the One Health and Scholarly Communications Librarian at 902-620-5418 or knmccaffrey@upei.ca.

To deposit, e-mail publications @ upei dot ca

Frequently Asked Questions

What content can be submitted to IslandScholar?

The content of IslandScholar reflects the scholarly output of the campus. Documents must include at least one author that is affiliated with UPEI. Content is included on the basis of its educational, research, or institutional merit. This can include but is not limited to journal articles, including all versions allowed by copyright, supplementary materials for articles (excluding datasets), book chapters, monographs, open education resources (OERs) (limited to materials that are not suitable for Pressbooks), conference materials (posters, papers, presentations, proceedings, etc), theses and dissertations and their associated supplementary materials, lecture / classroom materials / syllabi, grant/technical reports, working papers, audio or video recordings, and metadata only records.

Citations for publications will be added upon publication (not submitted or accepted) so that records in IslandScholar are as complete as possible. Preprint versions of publications can be added as full-text to a citation if the copyright allows after the final verison has been published.

What file formats are accepted in IslandScholar?

Content may be submitted in many formats, including, but not limited to text documents, 3D models, Images (photographs), audio, slide decks, spreadsheets, videos.

If your file format is not listed here, please contact the IslandScholar Manager at publications at upei dot ca.

Who owns the content in IslandScholar?

Islandscholar records include a variety of metadata, which is owned by the Robertson Library. However, if a record contains a full text document attached to the record, then the copyright holder remains the author or the designated copyright holder.

Does the Library remove content from IslandScholar?

IslandScholar is a digital archive and is intended as a permanent location for items deposited. There are a few instances where works may be withdrawn, such as proven copyright violation or plagiarism, breaches of confidentiality, or falsified research.

When a request is made to remove a record, only the file is removed. The record and all pertaining metadata remains for future reference (a tombstone record), and the permalink will remain active. If necessary, an explanation for the work’s removal may be included. To request the removal of an item please contact publications at upei dot ca.

If duplicate records are identified, a review of both records will occur and be addressed on a case-by-case basis. Both records may be kept, the newest record may be deleted, the oldest record may be deleted, or the least robust record may be deleted.

If a newer or edited version of an item already in the collection is submitted to IslandScholar, then a new record is created and links are created between versions.
