Abstract

Polyarom. ether/imines with pendent cationic cyclopentadienyliron moieties were prepd. using two different synthetic strategies. The first methodol. involved the reaction of diiron complexes contg. terminal complexed chloroarenes with diphenolic compds. In this strategy, the imine functionality was present as a part of the diiron monomer, and the polymn. process proceeded via nucleophilic arom. substitution. In the second approach, polycondensation of a dialdehyde organoiron complex with aliph. or arom. diamines yielded the arom. ether/imine polymers. While the cationic organometallic polymers were sol. in polar aprotic solvents, their org. analogs exhibited significantly reduced soly. in common org. solvents. The thermal stability of the organometallic and org. polymers was investigated using thermogravimetric anal. It was found that the cyclopentadienyliron moieties were lost at 210 to 330 °C, while degrdn. of the polymer backbones occurred at onset temps. of 440 to 470 °C.
