Abstract
Many fishes have evolved vascular devices called retia that permit the passive exchange of heat or substances from one blood vessel to the surrounding blood vessels. The evolution of retia occurred in a small number of fishes that allowed them to become regional heterotherms, that is, to be warm-bodied. Retia also are an essential element in the evolution of the swimbladder for buoyancy control and in the evolution of the choroid rete to deliver oxygen to the retina.
