Treatment of radio-ulnar fractures in little dogs.

The incidence of distal radio-ulnar fractures is particularly high in small and miniature breed dogs. Fixation using a plate or external fixation is recommended. By contrast, placement of a resin cast or use of an intramedullary pin is not recommended because these methods are associated with various complications notably non-union or mal-union. A spongy or cortico-spongy bone graft can be realised during open reduction and is highly recommended for chronic fractures on which one or several attempts of orthopaedic fixation have previously been performed. It is important that use of the limb is introduced progressively during the postoperative period in order to limit the occurrence of osteopenia of the radius. Implant removal is not a recommendation rather than a contra-indication. The prognosis for these fractures is good to excellent however unsuitable treatment can result in limb amputation.
