This paper evaluates the relative predictability of three indices of agrarian classes used in the study of social relations in Indian villages, and examines the extent to which class and caste continue to be closely related in light of the data collected from three villages in West Bengal. The three indices of class considered are: ownership and size of land holding; occupation and involvement in cultivation; and use of hired labour as a proportion of total labor. Each index is found to be strongly related not only to the other two indices - thereby indicating that they all tapped the phenomenon of social stratification based on class in the three villages - but also several social variables generally considered to be related to class.
