Observations were carried out on the catches of 2 fixed fishing gears in the upper estuary of the St-Lawrence during the 1974 season (June-Oct) as part of a programme for improving fixed fishing gears. The total catch of the experimental fishery was 18,034 (36 spp) and of the control, 5,367 (35 spp). Only {approx} 15 spp were caught in large quantities. Except for the eel, rainbow trout, carp and walleye the catches of all spp were greater in the experimental fishery. Higher percentage of the catches were made during the rising tide and during the day. The percentage of fish caught during the day was greater for the experimental fishery than for the control fishery. From these experiments, data on the behaviour of the spp have been obtained: day and night displacements, reactions to currents, etc.
