Abstract
Specimens of Thorea violacea Bory de St. Vincent (Rhodophyta, Batrachospermales) were collected from Matutinao River, southwestern Cebu, Philippines. The collection represents a new Philippine record and is the fourth genus of freshwater Rhodophyta recorded for the Philippine algal flora. Morphological analysis and a brief nomenclatural history of the species are presented. A comprehensive historical survey of Philippine freshwater phycology dating back from a century ago is also included.
