The effects of oral and parenteral immunization on phagocytosis of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli by neutrophils in the intestinal lumen were studied in weanling pigs. Phagocytosis was assessed with the light and electron microscope on samples of fluid from ligated intestinal loops four hours after inoculation with E. coli. Some phagocytosis of E. coli occurred in non-immune pigs but phagocytosis was significantly increased in parenterally immunized animals. Bacteria multiplied about 10-fold in ligated intestinal loops of non-immune animals, but bacterial growth did not occur in immunized pigs. The results suggest that phagocytosis is an immune mechanism on the intestinal mucosal surface..
