In a comparison of 2 formalin killed vaccines, SHAWOGEN using an isolate (AVC U-13220) of Vibrio anguillarum (serotype 2) isolated from cod, and a commercial vaccine (VIBROGEN-2) prepared from 3 isolates (2 V. anguillarum, and V. ordalii) the vaccines were given i.p. with mild anaesthesia, by spraying, and by immersion. Groups of about 60 fish were used. The vaccinated fish were challenged with V. anguillarum serotype 2. Antibody titres indicated an agglutinating response in all groups by 47 days after vaccination with highest titres sustained through to day 98 in the i.p. group. The mortality rates were 39, 51 and 8% in the VIBROGEN-2 spray, immersion and injection groups respectively, and 45, 9 and 27% in the SHAWOGEN spray, immersion and injection groups respectively. Mortality rate was 65% in untreated controls. Antibody titre was not consistently correlated with survival..
