Abstract

During 1978-79 a private colony of rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were tuberculin tested. Several positive reactions were detected. On PM examination a total of 15 animals, which included reactors as well as in-contacts, showed gross lesions in internal organs. The lungs, spleen and occasionally liver were sites of caseous abscesses of varying sizes. M. bovis was isolated from all 15 monkeys. The isolates were sensitive to isoniazid, and thiophene-2 carboxylic hydrazide and negative to niacin and nitrate tests. Unpasteurized milk was thought to be the source of the infection. The zoonotic implications are discussed..
