Genetic parameters were estimated for clinical mastitis (CM) and four traits for somatic cell count (SCC) based on patterns in consecutive test-day records. Data, spanning 3 years (1992-94), came from 274 Dutch herds and contained 24 030 lactations of 19 750 cows, with 3399 cases of CM. Phenotypic results showed that the patterns could distinguish between pathogen-specific CM, i.e. Escherichia coli was associated with short peaks in SCC, and Staphylococcus aureus with longer increased SCC. A heritability of 0.09 was estimated for the lactation average of somatic cell score (SCS). Heritabilities for the patterns ranged from 0.00 to 0.07. Genetic correlations between CM and the two heritable patterns (h2>0.01) were 0.55 and 0.68, indicating that in lactations with CM more peaks in SCC are present. Future improvements are expected to increase the heritabilities and genetic correlations even more..
