Four problem herds, totalling 143 cows, with persistent high milk cell counts were investigated. The standard mastitis prevention programme brought about some reduction in cell count, even though its application was incomplete. Bacteriological examination identified 45 cows with Streptococcus agalactiae mastitis, and herd cell counts were reduced by treating these cows with a combination of procaine penicillin and neomycin, except in one herd which also had 16 cases of Staphylococcus aureus mastitis..
