Abstract

All the cattle on 3 dairy herds endemically infected with paratuberculosis were tested 3 times at 6-month intervals by faecal culture and serological tests for paratuberculosis. Production data and somatic cell counts were also collected. Estimates of sensitivity relative to faecal culture were higher for the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) than for the agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test, but specificity was lower. There was no statistical difference between faecal culture and the ELISA in the time period in which infection was first identified. Faecal culture detected infection earlier than AGID. Statistical analysis or results showed that milk production was lower in subclinically infected animals at least during the lactation in which they became faecal culture positive..
