Abstract

80 ejaculates were obtained from each of 4 [male][male] from a line selected for post-thawing fertility duration of their inseminated spermatozoa, and the same number of ejaculates was obtained from 4 [male][male] of a randombred line. Semen was diluted with N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) or glycerol as cryoprotectant, and frozen to -196 degrees C at -6 degrees per min. On thawing, glycerol was removed by dilution and centrifugation before insemination, but semen with DMA was used directly. For semen from both lines, the fertility percentage, duration of fertility, and fertility rate were significantly higher for semen frozen in glycerol than for semen frozen in DMA, but hatchability was not significantly affected by the cryoprotectant used. Semen from the selected line gave significantly higher values than semen from the randombred line for the first 3 traits..
