Diagnostic Virologist; Adjunct & Graduate Faculty member; Clinical Veterinary Professional-Virology, Diagnostic Services
DVM, MSc (Philippines); PhD (Cornell); DACVM
Dr. Yason began her career at UPEI as head of the Regional Diagnostic Virology Services (RDVS) in 1988, soon after the AVC opened. The RDVS offers virology diagnostic services to the four Atlantic Provinces on a wide range of animal species. Over the years, Dr. Yason has led the evolution of virology diagnostic services from traditional methods such as virus isolation, negative staining EM, fluorescent antibody tests, to more modern methods such as traditional PCR, real time PCR, multiplex assay and sequencing. Over the years, Dr. Yason has remained current with emerging technologies in the diagnostic field and has continually implemented new methods to ensure availability of reliable and cost-effective virology diagnostic services for Atlantic Canada through securing grants and contracts with AAFC, NSERC and other research agencies in collaboration with colleagues at AVC and other animal health agencies.
Dr. Yason holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and Master of Science degree from the University of the Philippines. She also holds a diploma in International Veterinary Pathology from Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and a PhD degree in veterinary virology from Cornell University. She is a board certified microbiologist with specialty in veterinary virology, granted by the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists.
